This for all people who have had issue with their name with FNU.
I came to USA on F1 visa. My passport had only one name Harish, and i got my visa stamped with name FNU Harish. I had no issue getting into the US. once i landed to USA i got my SS cards, DL and all my doc's, with FNU Harish. After graduating with my masters i applied for my H1 which got approval letter with the same name. I finally decided to get this changed and researched about the same. so here is how i finally got rid of FNU.
1. went to local court house and got name name changed to "Harish xxx(last name)"
2. with the court order i went to the SS office and applied for name change. The process went through smoothly and they took my original SS card . After 5 days i got my SS card with name changed.
3.I let my payroll company know of name change with the copy of the new SS card
4. Went to BMV gave them the copy of court order and got my DL with new name
5. I got another job offer and i applied for H1B transfer with a copy of the court order for name change and the petition was approved with corrected name.
6. Went to Indian Embassy in Houston and gave the dcouments for the name change and received the corrected passport the same day.
If you do not want to transfer you can file an amendment I129 for name change.
and thats it my 2 and1/2 years in the US with FNU was finally got rid off.
